Sans Amp Programmable Bass Driver DI Much more than just a direct box, the SansAmp Bass Driver DI is capable of dialing up big vintage tube tones, bright modern slap sounds, gnarly distortions, and all in between. Three different outputs to drive power amps, recording desks, PA mixers, or simply enhance your current rig. Controls include Presence for definition and upper harmonic content; Blend to combine the proportion of direct signal and SansAmp circuitry; and active EQ specifically tuned for bass with 12dB of cut or boost. The controls offer a broad range of traditional bass amp sounds, including such meaty styles as Bassman and SVT, as well as raunchy, crunchy overdriven sounds that would typically require a multitude of effects units. For studio and live applications, SansAmp Bass Driver DI is engineered with three outputs: an effected XLR, and effected 1/4", and a parallel, unaffected 1/4". The footswitch activates the Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry. Disengaging the circuitry enables you to use SansAmp Bass Driver DI as a standard active transparent direct box.

I am a professional performing and studio musician and I am very impressed with the versatility and raw power of this little box. It has unbelievably responsive tone shaping, and the Sansamp tube modeling is as smooth and warm as you could hope for. The casing seems nice and solid, although the battery lid feels a little bit flimsy. Also, the ground lift being combined with the Phantom switch means that you have to run on battery power if the PA ground has any hum. That said, the main reason I am writing this is that when it arrived it was packaged very poorly. I ordered it directly from Amazon and when it arrived it was sitting in the box with just a packing slip and a one extremely undersized plastic air cushion that was deflated. The tin that the pedal comes in was dented in numerous places and the lid was off. Luckily the pedal itself seems to be built well enough to have withstood the shipping abuse but I would definitely order this product from a different site.

It's hard to oversell this device. I have been an active bass player for over 15 years. I've played in concert halls, bars, at parties, on college campuses, and currently at a very large church with a nearly state of the art PA (it's now about 3 years old). I've always been a tone geek with a firm belief that acceptable tone comes only through a high-end head and cabinet amp setup. My frustration began when we built our new church building. The sound techs were going crazy trying to handle the excess sound from on-stage guitar and bass amps. If you are a tube amp player, you know that you can't get tone until the amp is cranked. The "solution" was to get rid of the amps. The electrics started playing through PODs, and yours truly was stuck playing directly through the house. I usually play a Carvin LB70 with active pickups, but even the excellent tone of the guitar was insufficient for my taste. Joyful noise - yes. Desired tone - no. Then I found the BSDR-DLX. It comes VERY close to getting me the tube amp tone that I have come to love. I've only been using it for a short while, but I expect to get even closer to the tone I want over time.

Pros: Excellent tone with lots of variety. Nice ability to generate a touch of distortion without getting muddy. Very simple and intuitive controls (there's a great demo video on Youtube for the original Sansamp bass driver that also applies to the DLX). Built like a tank. Works very well with phantom power and 9v battery (I haven't used the DC option). Soundless switching between two instruments. In my case that's the LB70 and an Ibanez acoustic bass. Setting and recalling the presets couldn't be easier. Works very well as a DI. It is easy to bypass the effects for an unaffected signal. The parallel out is a nice option for using a tuner etc.

Cons: You have to watch the noise just a bit. I work with an outstanding sound tech who knows how to EQ the board to minimize noise from guitar effects. Even if you have that expertise working for you, you will need to be aware of when you've put just a touch too much effect in the line. It would be nice to have a mute button for doing a quick check of the tuning without having to put another pedal in the chain. Even though it's a bit pricey, I recommend it - particularly if you haven't yet invested in a huge rig.

Caveat: I have not worked with this pedal in conjunction with a bass rig. I spent about an hour using it with a practice amp to figure out the basic controls. If you want to to know how it performs with your amp and cabinet, you'll have to find another reviewer.

Tech 21 PBDR SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver DI

Tech 21 PBDR SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver DI
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have only owned the Tech 21 SansAmp Programmable Bass Driver DI for a few days at the time of writing, but I am already in love! The analogue circuitry modifies my bass tone, making it sound more modern, like a pro fridge rig. I use this pedal in conjunction with a Boss ODB-3 (after the SansAmp in the chain) for extra bite, having the SansAmp setup with a clean channel and slightly dirty channel for extra grit (with 2 gain stages it's ultra heavy :D). My current rig is a Yamaha RBX375 bass with a Hartke HA3500 head and Hartke VX410 cab.

I have tried turning up the drive and blend controls to full to get a distorted sound, and have found it to be less angry and growly than the Boss ODB-3 on its own. Having said that, setting the SansAmp to clean and slightly dirty levels has made my bass sound very nice, especially when using a slightly higher than average Presence value, for those piercing bell-like high mids on the G-string.

Using the SansAmp as a DI is also great, i can plug my bass in then XLR out to my Mbox and record in Pro Tools, sometimes while only using battery power from my laptop (and 9v battery for the SansAmp). The point is, I don't even need to use an amp to get a great sound, it's in the name "sans"amp.

The SansAmp is one step closer to getting tone similar to Justin Chancellor (Tool) and Jon Stockman (Karnivool), while their grit sounds are more complex than the SansAmp alone (hence the use of a ODB-3 in conjunction), the way it changes the sound of my bass's clean sound is great!

It's also very easy to use (just turn the knobs while a channel is on, then double tap to save that setting) - 3 great (and possibly vastly different) tones in one box! - 3 times more versatile than the Bass Driver DI (non-programmable with only 1 channel).

All in all it's an awesome, useful and versatile way to help make your rig sound much more expensive - much more than a simple overdrive.

This pedal is the perfect tool for the gigging musician who wants to be ready for any venue or as backup in case his amp fails and he has to go direct. It's a great DI with a good preamp attached to it.

Let's face it, some places won't have the best backline for you to plug into so you need to be able to sculpt a good tone out of what they have. And let's face it, most people like the Ampeg tone which this pedal emulates (and very well).

The pedal gives you just enough control to quickly dial a nice sound. You plug in, power up and turn the knobs until you like what you hear. Judicious use of the blend knob makes up for the lack of a midrange control. I never felt hobbled by this design quirk.

Tonewise, this pedal is NOT transparent. It won't sound like your bass but with gain. You MUST accept the Ampeg tone emulation if you plan on buying this pedal. You can't dial it out. Purists will say it doesn't really duplicate an SVT. Well nothing will, but the Sansamp brings you close enough to fool most people especially live. As a former SVT owner, I think the Sansamp captures the "power tubes on the verge of breakup" sound very well while weighing 88 pounds less.

My only complaint about this pedal is that the switch is soft like a Moog or Markbass. It doesn't make a hard click like your typical MXR or EHX pedal. I have to be careful when I stomp on it to make sure I actually engaged/disengaged it. Other than that, I think everything about the construction is good. The DC jack is standard BOSS 9V, the knobs are easy to use and see while the overall size and shape of the effect is pedalboard friendly.

Once again, great DI with good pre but ONLY if you like the SVT vibe. If your tone goals steer you more towards clean then you might not like this pedal.
